Morton

The manors of Morton and Ogstone, given by Wulfric Spott to Burton Abbey, at the Domesday survey, belonged to Walter Deincourt, and in 1330 Roger Deincourt, claimed a park, and the right of having a gallows for the execution of criminals. The manor passed with other estates to the Leakes.

Nicholas Leake was nephew of Robert Leake (1654-1707), Lord Deincourt, 3rd Earl of Scarsdale, M.P. who died without an heir.

After the death of Nicholas Leake, 4th Earl of Scarsdale, who died bankrupt about 1736, his estates were broken up and the Earl's trustees sold Morton to Henry Thornhill, sometime Mayor of Chesterfield, and others.

In 1749, the manor was purchased by Francis Sitwell, Esq., of Renishaw; under the will of his sister and heir, Mrs. Elizabeth Sitwell. ( Mary Sitwell had married William Revell of Ogston), it passed to Richard Stannton Wilmot, who took the name of Sitwell, and after his death to his next brother, Edward Sacheverel Wilmot, who took the name of Sitwell in addition to that of Wilmot.

The Deincourts of Morton established themselves at an early date at a mansion known as Park Hall which lay between the villages of Morton and North Wingfield.
