Pedigree of Fell of Attercliffe Forge, Sheffield
John Fell (1666-1724) was the first of the Attercliffe ironmasters of that name. He was succeeded by his son John Fell (1696-1762) who was Managing Partner. The company also had associated works in Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Fell with two partners, Milner and Clay, also manufactured cementation steel in furnaces at Ballifield (Handsworth) and at Worksop Road, Attercliffe. Read More

In the aisle running from south to north between the nave and chancel in Sheffield Parish Church were the plates of this Family:
Here lye the remains of John Fell of Attercliffe Forge who died April 30th 1724 aged 58 years. Ellen his wife died January 7th 1724 aged 60 years. Also two sons and three daughters:
- Ann died February 18th 1700 aged one year
- William died May 2nd 1713 aged 19
- Thomas died December 14th 1726 aged 28 years
- Mary died January 9th 1727 aged 23 years
- Elizabeth died January 18th 1736 aged 32 years
Here lyeth the body of Alice the wife of John Fell the younger of Attercliffe Forge and daughter of Richard Bagshaw of Castleton. She died August 8th 1737 aged 27 years. John his son and of Elizabeth his second wife died the 15th April 1743 in the first year of his age.
Here lyeth the body of John Fell of Attercliffe Forge who died May 17th 1762 aged 66 years. Elizabeth his second wife 29th January, 1795 aged 85.
The first Mr. Fell began his working life as a clerk for Denis Heyford at Wortley Forge. He moved to Brightside and Attercliffe Forge
His son erected a brick house with spacious gardens a very desirable property - New Hall.He chose to build it here close to the forge where both he and his father had acquired their wealth. (Attercliffe Forge was the Earl of Shrewsbury's and was leased to Lional Copley)
For many years New Hall was the residence of Mrs Elizabeth Fell the widow of the younger Mr. Fell. She was one of two unmarried sisters from the Laughton family who came to live in Sheffield around 1730.
They were soon noticed by a Mrs. Elizabeth Parkin, and taken under her protection. Elizabeth married John Fell and her sister married Mr. Walter Oborne, a close relative of Elizabeth Parkin, to whom she gave by her will her estate at Ravenfield. Mrs Oborne left no issue.
Elizabeth Fell left money to various charitable institutions in Sheffield: £500 each for a charitable school for boys and one for girls. £300 each - for a Sunday School in Attercliffe and another in Brightside.
New Hall, she gave to Richard Swallow, whose son Richard married a sister of Hugh Parker of Woodthorpe and resided there.
Pre-nuptial settlement: 20 Aug 1734.

Messuage at Hill Top, Attercliffe, messuage near Washforth Bridge and cottages in Attercliffe and Brightside, Upper and Nether Newfield and the Mears, Holmes and Forge Close in Brightside; Burkes House in Darfield and the closes, formerly the estate of Gamaliel Milner; to stated uses, in consideration of the marriage between John Fell and Alice Bagshaw, daughter of Richard and for £1,500.
