Darcy

The Darcys were followers of the Conqueror, and, among those Barons who resisted the tyranny of King John. Philip, whose grandson John was Lord of Eckington, made himself memorable in history by accusing Henri, de Bathe, senior judge of England, of extortion

One of the military heroes of the first half of the fourteenth century was John Darcy, Lord of Eckington, a peer of the realm, and husband of Elizabeth Meynell, of Meynell Langley. He was with Edward I at Falkirk, and with Edward III at Cressy. He was made Constable of the Tower, Sheriff of Nottingham, and Derby, and Lancaster, Justice of Ireland, Steward of the King's household, and employed as Ambassador to France.

John, great grandson of John Lord of Eckington and founder of the Darcy's of Aston married Joan Greystock while in his teens without a licence.

 

Thomas Lord Darcy (great-grandson of John Darcy and Joan Greystock) m1.Isabel, daughter and heiress of Richard Tempest of Giggleswick. m2. before 1520, Edith, widow of Ralph Nevill(d.1498). Thomas was beheaded in 1537, for his role in the Pilgrimage of Grace. Children:

Dorothy (Nee Melton) died in 1557 and various estates including Aston, Ulley Grange, Stainton and Hellaby passed to her children.

John Darcy and Elizabeth West lived at Firbeck, where John, Lord Darcy was buried in 1635. The Aston estates then passed to Conyers Lord Darcy (1598-1689)

Thomas Darcy and Elizabeth had a son Conyers Darcy (1570-1653) who married 1594 to Dorothy Belasyse (Bellasis)

Conyers Darcy, 2nd Earl of Holderness married:

  1. Lady Catherine Fane, daughter of Francis Fane, and Mary Mildmay
  2. Lady Frances Howard, daughter of Thomas Howard, Earl of Berkshire and Lady Elizabeth Cecil, on 8 February 1649/50<.li>
  3. Frances Seymour, daughter of William Seymour, Duke of Somerset
  4. Elizabeth Frecheville, daughter of John Frecheville

Children of Conyers, 2nd Earl of Holderness and Frances (Howard):

On the death of Conyers, 2nd Earl of Holderness in 1692, the estates went to Robert Darcy, grandson and 3rd Earl.

Children of John Darcy(1659-1688) and Bridget:

Conyers Darcy KB, married twice. Firstly Mary (1629-1726), daughter of William Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland; secondly in 1728 to Elizabeth Rotheram, daughter of John Rotheram of Essex.

In July 1768 John Parker of Woodthorpe, Handsworth, was appointed Steward of the Manor of Aston and Wales by the Earl of Holderness. In 1773 Robert 4th Earl of Holderness sold the Aston Estates to Harry Verelst.

The Manor of Wales, was granted to John Pope at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. He then alienated it to Sir George Darcy of Aston in whose family it remained until sold by Robert, the last Earl of Holderness to Thomas 4th Duke of Leeds in 1775.
