Fane of Aston

Sir Thomas Fane(d.1588) , married Mary Neville, Baroness le Despenser on 12 December, 1574, at Birling, Kent.

Mary Neville was the daughter of Lord Henry Neville, Lord Abergavenny(b 1483) and Frances Manners

Thomas Fane and Mary had one child: Francis Fane, 1st Earl of Westmorland born February, 1579.

Francis Fane, 1st Earl of Westmorland(1579-1628) married Mary Mildmay on 15th February, 1598. Their children:

  1. Mildmay, Earl of Westmorland 2nd, born 24 January 1601. Married in 1626 to Grace Thornhurst
  2. Francis (d.1680), Poet & Dramatist. Married Elizabeth daughter of William West of Firbeck.
  3. George
  4. Lady Grace, born 1604. Married James Home, Earl of Home 2nd
  5. Catherine who married to Conyers Darcy,2nd Earl of Holderness

Children of Sir Francis Fane and Elizabeth (Nee West) d.1669:

Elizabeth Fane died in 1669 and Sir Francis Fane continued to live in Aston until his death aged 69 in 1680. Their tomb holds a prominent position in Aston Church.

Sir Francis and Elizabeth probably lived at an area known as 'Canonthorpe' which was situated close to Hail Mary Wood. In January 1637/8 Henry Earnshaw and Will Radcliffe of Treeton were fined 20s. after confessing to breaking and entering the close of Francis Fane, commonly called Hell Mother Hill, and hunting and killing a doe.

In 1664, the Manor or lordship of Firbeck , and manor house or capital messuage called Firbeck Hall and one dovecote and water corne mill, and all messuages, cottages, lands, tenements, meadows, pastures, closes, woods etc. (late the inheritance of John West esq. deceased in Firbeck) and in Maltby, Yorks; and all messuages, lands, grounds, meadows, pastures etc. late the inheritance of John West in Thwaytes, Letwell, Gidingwells, Tropham, Laughton and Ewes, Yorks.; and tenement or farmhold in Firbeck,( late in the tenure of John Sanderson) . It was passed to the Hon. Sir Francis Fane the younger, K.B., son and heir apparent on his marriage to Hannah Rushworth, the eldest daughter of John Rushworth of Lincoln's Inn.

In 1708 Thomas Fane, 6th Earl of Westmoreland married Katherine Stringer, daughter and heir of Thomas Stringer of Sharleston.

On 7th October, 1856, the wife of Cecil Fane, gave birth to a son at Firbeck Hall.
