Boroughs

MS 556
MS556

Hunter comments:
¹ The above Richard names the following persons, 1590, besides others in the Pedigree, Thos & Francis Snell of Cambridge, Will, Rob & Hugh Snell, Mr. Harrison, Francis Dixon, Edward Fretwell, Alice & Richard Fretwell, Thos Snell of Hull, Hugh Snell of Wakefield, clothier.

It appears that this Richard Boroughs married Elizabeth, daughter of John Snell of Rotherham, widow of John Wilkinson of Bolton-on-Dearne & that she was divorced by him. In Jackson's 'Book of Precedents' he is spoken of with a wife named Margaret. He had Mousden Carr in Gresbrook (Greasbrough) which is perhaps the site of Carr House of the Westby's and Gills.

² This appears to be the Rob. B. of Crookesmoor Sheffield, yeoman, who is described as cousin & next heir to John Boroughs late of Guilthwaite, 8 April, 25 Eliz.

Hunter States:
I am but little satisfied with this Pedigree, on which less reliance is to be placed than one other in this book which I have compiled from original evidences. Whether Richard of Tinsley & Richard of Guilthwaite were as they stand may be questioned, at least the evidence is not conclusive. It was I suppose, he of Tinsley who mar. Mrs Alice Stringer at Sheffield 16 Sep 1632. Who was Margery dau of Richard Boroughs of Brinsworth who married 1. ---Tuke and 2. John Rasine of Doncaster; and who was the Richard Boroughs on the left in the scrap of Pedigree found in Johnston's notes? I Find in the will of Sara Dickenson of Rotherham, wid. 6 April 1679, she speaks of Mr. Cousins, Mr. Richard Boroughs and John his brother, and of her cousins Thomas, William & Mary Boroughs. She was aunt to Nathaniel Revel of Brampton. I feel better satisfied with it, however, since comparing it with the Bunting Wills.
1634 Richard Mounteney, Esq. & Richard Burrowes, Gent, were kinsmen.
1673 Richard Borroughs late of parish of Rotherham, and gave at his death all his Real & Personal Estate within the said parish, to Richard Burroughs his nephew, which said Richard having but a small family and now leaving the said parish & Diocese. Chares Darwent, Gent, his tenant & kinsman within the said parish.
