Jebb of Walton

Joshua Jebb, Esq. of Walton, and Richard Jebb, Esq. of Tapton Grove, were grandsons of Joshua Jebb, Alderman of Chesterfield. Samuel Jebb, M.D., well known in the literary world, and John Jebb, Dean of Cashell, were brothers of the Alderman of Chesterfield. Dr. Samuel Jebb was father of Sir Richard Jebb, the eminent physician. The Dean of Cashell was father of Dr. John Jebb, a well known controversial and political writer who died in 1786.

Jebb and the Firbeck Estates

Sydney Gladwin Jebb (1871-1950) was the eldest son of Joshua Gladwin Jebb (died 1901) of Barnby Moor House, Notts. whose father, Sir Joshua Jebb, had a sister Frances Harriott who married in 1829 William Miles of Clifton, Glos. She died without issue in 1877 leaving her estates, which she had purchased at Firbeck Hall, to her nephew, Henry Gladwin Jebb (son of Sir Joshua's younger brother Samuel Henry), with remainder to the eldest son of Joshua Gladwin Jebb.

The Firbeck estates formed the Miles Trust and were inherited by Sydney Gladwin Jebb on the death of Henry Gladwin Jebb on 19th April, 1898.>The will of Henry Gladwyn Jebb dated 26 April, 1897 was proved on July 16 1898 by his nephew, George Samuel Jebb and Robert Plumptre Ramsden, executors. The value of his estate was £77,197

 

Sir Joshua Jebb,(1793–1863), surveyor-general of convict prisons, was eldest son of Joshua Jebb of Walton, Derbyshire and Dorothy, daughter of General Henry Gladwin. He was born at Chesterfield on 8 May 1793. He was twice married; first, on 14 June 1830, to Mary Legh, daughter of William Burtinshaw Thomas, of Highfield, Derbyshire, who died in 1850, and by whom he had a son, Joshua Gladwyn, and three daughters; secondly, on 5 Sept. 1854, to Lady Amelia Rose Pelham, daughter of Thomas Pelham, Earl of Chichester, who survived him.

Sydney Gladwin married Rose Eleanor Chichester in 1899, at Pilston, Barnstaple. Their son, Gladwyn Jebb was born 25 April 1900.

Gladwyn Jebb

Gladwyn was educated at Eton, then Magdalen College, Oxford, taking a 1st in History. In 1929 he married Cynthia Noble (1898–1990), daughter of Sir Saxton Noble; they had one son and two daughters., Miles (b. 1930), Vanessa (b. 1931) and Stella (b. 1933).

Gladwyn Jebb knighted in 1949 and in 1950 he was posted to New York as the British representative on the Security Council of the United Nations, where he achieved popular fame during the Korean crisis. In 1960 Gladwyn Jebb retired from the foreign service and was granted a peerage

Mary Dorothy Jebb

On 28th April, 1854, Mary Dorothy Jebb, the eldest daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Jebb, C.B., HM Surveyor of Prisons, married Rev. Henry J. Ellison (1813–1899), Vicar of Edensor, domestic chaplain to the Duke of Devonshire, and Hon Canon of Lichfield, at Firbeck Parish Church. Rev. J. B. Jebb M.A., incumbent of Brampton, and Rev. Charles Campbell, both uncles of the bride, officiated

A large party had assembled the previous day, at Firbeck Hall, home of Mrs. Miles. Among them was Mrs. Ellison, the mother, Mr. Ellison and Cuthbert Ellison, brothers, Mr. Ramsden and family of Carlton, Miss Blomfield, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Jebb, Mr. Wilbraham, Rev. Charles & Miss Campbell, Mr.& Mrs. Charles Jebb, Miss Arnold, Mr. Munnings Thomas, Mr & Mrs. Boothby, Col. Jebb and others. About 11 o'clock a procession of carriages went from the Hall to the church, which had been carpeted for the occasion by Mr. Drabble of Carlton.

In the evening neighbouring families joined the party including, Sir. Thomas White and his daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Walker of Blythe, Mr. & Mrs and Miss Athorpe, Captain & Mrs. Walters, Mr. T. Walker and the Misses Walker, Mr. Hugh Parker & family, Mrs. Mellish, Mr. & Mrs. Gurdon and others.

Rev.Ellison and Mary Dorothy had at least 2 sons, their second son, Sir Gerald Francis (1861–1947), was educated at Marlborough College and entered the army in 1882.

Frances Dorothy Jebb

On 21st August, 1856, Frances Dorothy Jebb, daughter of S. H. Jebb, married at Firbeck to Thomas Laurence, eldest son of Thomas Kington of Somerset.

Edith Fanny Jebb

In May, 1889 the marriage took place at Firbeck Church of Edith Fanny Jebb, daughter of Rev. H. G. Jebb, and Mr. J. S. Burton Borough, J.P. of Chetwynd Park Newport, Shropshire.

The Dean of York, the Rev Canon Kingsbury performed the ceremony. Bridesmaids were Miss Jebb, Miss Mabel Jebb, Miss Mary Ramsden, Miss Dallas, Miss Lillas Hoare, Miss Dorothy Bowles and Miss Turbutt, Page boys were Masters Turbutt and W. C. White. The best man was the bridegrooms brother, Mr. C. Burton Borough.

A reception was held at Firbeck Hall, guests included the Earl of Scarborough, the Dean of York, Mr. and Mrs. Burton Borough, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Turbutt of Ogston Hall.
