White/Woolaston White

Thomas White, esq (son of Nicholas White of Suffolk) purchased the manor of Tuxford. He married Anne(Agnes) Cecil, eldest sister of William, Lord Burghley, Lord-high-treasurer of England.

Thomas White was succeeded by his only son, Sir John White (d.1625), of Tuxford, who served the office of Sheriff of Nottinghamshire in the 20th year of King James 1. He married Dorothea, daughter of Sir John Harpur, of Swarkeston, Derby.

Sir John White (d.1625) was succeeded by his only surviving son, Thomas White,esq. of Tuxford.

The grandson of Thomas White, esq. of Tuxford, M.P. married in 1698, Bridget, only daughter and heiress of Richard Taylor, of Wallingwells (who was son of Major Samuel Taylor),and his wife Bridget, daughter of Sir Ralph Knight of Langold; Thomas was succeeded by his eldest son, John White of Tuxford and Wallingwells who died unmarried in 1768 the estates went to his brother Taylor White.

TaylorWhite, of Lincoln's Inn, a barrister, judge of Chester, recorder of Stamford and steward of East Retford, married twice:

  1. Anne Errington
  2. Frances, daughter and co-heiress of Major Gen. John Armstrong. They had a son, Taylor

Taylor White died in 1771 and was succeeded by his son Taylor White, born 1743 who married in 1765 to Sarah eldest daughter and co-heiress of Sir Isaac Woollaston, of Lowesby. He was succeeded in 1795 by his eldest son, Thomas Woolaston White

Thomas Woolaston White, esq. of Wallingwells, was created a baronet, in 1802 for supporting a number of volunteers during the French war

Sir Thomas married in January, 1801 to Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Blagg esq. of Tuxford. Their children:

Sir Thomas Woolaston White was educated at Rugby and on leaving school he entered the army in the 10th Dragoons. He obtained a commission in the 3d West India Regiment, and from 1838 to 1852 was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Nottinghamshire Militia. He was a magistrate and deputy-lieutenant for Nottinghamshire and served as High Sherrif in 1839. He married twice, first in 1824 to Georgina daughter of George Ramsay. They had one child, Georgina born 18th November, 1825. It is not known when his first wife died, he married again in 1827 to Mary Euphemia, daughter of William Ramsay of Edinburgh. They had a daughter born on 16th July, 1829. He was left a widower again in 1861.

Sir Thomas died on 7th August, 1882 aged 81, at his residence at Wallingwells.

He was succeeded by his eldest son Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Woolaston White who was born in 1828.

Lieutenant Colonel Thomas W. White was educated at Eton before serving in the Yeomanry, he was with the 16th lancers in 1847 and retired in 1872. He was a magistrate for Nottinghamshire. He did not marry and was succeeded in the title by his nephew Mr. Archibald Woolaston, eldest son of W. K. H. R. White and Edith (Nee Paris).

Georgina married in 1856 to Horace Manners Monckton(1824-1904). They had 3 children:

Georgina died in 1879.

Sir Thomas Woolaston White died in May, 1907 at Scarborough.

His successor, Archibald, born in 1877, married Gladys Pitman, they had a son Thomas, born in 1904.

It is noted that in May 1908 a collection of valuable books and manuscripts from the home of Mr. Archibald Woolaston White at Wallingwells was for sale by auction. The collection included Milton's Paradise Lost, Chapman's Crown of all Homer's Works etc.

In 1913 Firbeck Main Colliery Company were undertaking boring operations on the estate of Mr. Archibald White at Wallingwells.
