Routh of Birley and Waleswood
It is written that the first known ancestor of the family of Routh Richard de Surdeval, or Surdus.
Sir Robert de Serdeval, married a daughter of Robert de Stuteville, Lord of the Manor of Routh, a hamlet near Beverley, Yorkshire.
William Routh of Waleswood died on 18 June 1619, John Routh of Romeley, was his son and heir, their was another son Richard and a daughter Dorothy, who married William Copley of Sprotborough.
William left land in Romeley, Moorhill in Cowicke, Snaith, and Gowdall, all in Yorkshire.
Helene daughter of Gervase Reresby of Woodlathes married on 27th May, 1647 to Richard Routh(1623-1683) of Pollington and Heck. She was first married to Maleverer Rikard of Heck
Richard (1623-1683) was the son of a John Routh.
About this time Lancelot Routh married a sister of Helene.
Romeley Hall passed from the Rouths to the Wrights, of Sheffield, with whom it remained till 1788, when it was bequeathed to Daniel Thornas Hill, and then was conveyed to the Gisbornes
Richard Routh of Kelfield had only one son, John Routh, of Waleswood in the parish of Treeton; he married Dorothy, daughter of John Eyre of Laughton-en-le-Morthen. They had one son, William Routh of Waleswood.
William Routh of Waleswood married Elizabeth, daughter of William Harding of Foss, in Lincolnshire. They had three children:
- Dorothy who married in 1619, William Copley of Sprotborough, Co. York, and had issue by him. (Dugdale states Dorothy daughter of William Rooth of Romeley , Clowne, Derbys)
- John born in 1597 who was knighted in 1628, becoming Sir John Routh, of Brenley Kent. He had four sons who all died without issue, and four daughters, three of whom married. With the death of the four sons (Francis, the youngest, died in 1677) the Waleswood branch of the Routh family was extinguished. He died on 22.3.1657 and was buried at Boughton-on-the--Blean, Kent, where his arms (the old arms of the family of the Rouths of Routh) appear on his tomb in the Parish Church.
- Richard who took to Law and was admitted to Gray's Inn on 15.5.1626
William Routh died on 18th June, 1620 and was buried at Treeton Parish Church where his arms can be seen on his tomb.
During his lifetime he had been guardian to the children of Richard Routh of Pollington after the latter's death in 1604. This seems to indicate that there was a good deal more solidarity between different branches of the family in those days than there is now, for William of Walesworth and Richard of Pollington were eighth cousins once removed.
The Pedigree of Machon shows Margery, daughter of John Machon and Anne, nee Jones of Treeton, married a Thomas Routh
With the death of the four sons of Sir John of Brenley, (Francis, the youngest, died in 1677) the Waleswood branch of the Routh family was extinguished.
