Reresby of Thrybergh

Ralph de Reresby, of Ashover, Derbyshire, married Margaret, daughter of Sir Ralph de Normanville, and sister and heiress of Adam de Normanville, in right of whom the manor of Thrybergh, and the Lordship of Brinsworth came into the Reresby family during the reign of Henry III.

The de Reresby family are listed in the Thrybergh Subsidy Rolls of 1379.

Lionel Reresby had sons: Thomas, Ralph, William, and Leonard, and 8 daughters including Ellen and Barbara.

Sir Thomas Reresby, the father of Arnold, married Maud Bosvile of Chevet, he was buried near his wife in Thrybergh Church. His wife died in June, 1430. Sir Thomas made his will 7 Dec. 1431, which was not proved until April 28, 1439. He orders himself to be buried in the church of St. Leonard at Thrybergh, and he desires that a chaplain may be found to do service for his soul, as well as for that of Matilda his wife, with others. His sons Ralph and Arnold Reresby are his residuary legatees and executors, and his cousin Peter De la Pole is the supervisor of his will. His father, another Sir Thomas Reresby, died in 1394.

Arnold Reresby of Rotherham, Esq. younger son of Sir Thomas Reresby of Thrybergh, who died in 1439. His will, dated 28 Nov. 1485, was proved at York on the 4th of January 1486:
He desires to be buried in the church of Thrybergh. He leaves 24 marks to a suitable priest who shall do service and pray specially for his soul, and for those of William Reresby his brother, and Isabella his sister, for the space of four years. To the making or glazing of a window in the Chapel of the Blessed Mary upon Rotherham Bridge, 6s. 8d. To Elizabeth, Margaret, and Alianor Reresby 6 marks each. To Thomas Reresby 20s. To Isabel Westby 10s. To Elizabeth Fitzwilliam 13s. 4d. To Arnold Wardrop, 13s. 4d. To Richard Reresby 13s. 4d. To Arnald Tak 6s. 8d. To the Abbot and Convent of Roche 13s.4d. To John Greenwood, Vicar of Rotherham, 10s. To John Treyton 20s. He appoints his cousin Ralph Reresby his executor.

Sir George Reresby, eldest son and heir of Sir Thomas, married Elizabeth, second daughter of John Tamworth, when about eighteen years old; he was knighted in 1614. On being married, Brinsworth and Ickles were settled upon him and he lived at the Ickles for the most part. He died about the age of 43, and was buried in Thrybergh church 4th February, 1628.

Sir George was succeeded by his son Sir John Reresby,christened 11th April, 1611, was Governor of Hull, and a leading Royalist in the Civil War, as were the majority of townspeople of South Yorkshire. After the war ended he settled at Thrybergh. He was married to Francis, daughter of Edmond Yarburgh, of Snaith Hall.

When he died in July 1646 he had debts of £1200, resulting from Cromwell's victory at Marston Moor in 1644, Thrybergh Park had been stripped of timber and its deer removed. He was succeeded by his eldest son Sir John who was born 1634 at Thrybergh
