THE MUNICIPAL RACES

The municipal elections during the seventies were made the occasion for a good deal of satire in the form of cartoons, squibs, etc.

The following is a copy of one which no doubt will be remembered by many of my readers:

Municipal Races: To be run on Saturday, November 1st, 1879. In consequence of the great depression in trade, or the lack of public spirit in Rotherham, but few entries have been made this year for the above meeting; in fact, some of the Ward Stakes have been at a serious discount, and entries have only been secured after a deal of persuasion and cautious considerations. List of entries, with pedigree of the starters, names of trainers:-

THE SCOTCHMAN, by Watchmaker, out of Mayoralty (old) trained by Talleyman or Has Your Mither Left the Shulling. Ultra Marine Blue and Very Blue Sleeves.

THE CONFECTIONER, by Bromley, out of Sweetmeats; trained by Temperate Draper, Deep Orange and Scarlet Cap and Sleeves.

EGG MERCHANT, by Pawnbroker, out of German Yeast; trained by Plummer, Tiler and Co. Yellow and Orange Stripes and Yellow Cap.

THE DYER, by Oddfellow, out of M.U. (old); trained by Ecomony and Public Opinion. Deep Orange Cap and Sleeves.

BLACKING POT, pedigree not known (young). Blue and Orange and Invisible Blue Cap.

THE GROCER, by Bottled Beer, out of Blue Bell; trained by Bobby Burns and The Victualler (young). Invisible Blue and Orange Stripes, with White Cap and Sleeves.

PORK CHOPS, by P.M., out of Flow of Spirits (young); trained by Cautiousness. Colours doubtful.

THE LAWYER, by Red Tape, out of Briefs; trained by Independence. Yellow Cap, etc.

THE OVERSEER, by Rag, out of Vestry Meeting; trained by Councillor and School Board, Deep Orange Cap, Scarlet Sleeves.

THE FARMER, out of sleepiness, by non- attendance; trained by Dullness; blue jacket and invisible yellow sleeves and cap.

The New B. Association Officers will see to the necessary arrangements.

Clerk of the Course: Mr. Allbrains, an itinerant tea merchant, and great law adviser.

Judge: Mr. WADE-LOW a partaker or stronger drinks than he manufactures.

Starter: Mr. SLOWCOACH (late see, to the T.R.A,).

WEST WARD HANDICAP.

Two very sprightly and highly trained tits are likely to make this event worthy of notice. The SCOTCHMAN is a wary animal with plenty of bounce and good running qualities about him, but he has so often

deceived his backers that the public are very cautious about placing confidence in him, and though he stands prominent in betting, he is not likely to win. He is doing plenty of work.             » next
