Sir Edward Osborne of Kiveton

Sir Edward Osborne (1596-1647),the son of Hewett Osborne, he was created a baronet in 1620. He was the grandson of Sir Edward Osborne a Lord Mayor of London. His sister Alice Osborne (1592-1659), married Christopher Wandesford(1592–1640), Lord deputy of Ireland, in 1614

He was born in December 1596 in St. Benet's, Gracechurch, London, the son of Sir Hewett Osborne and Joyce Fleetwood, daughter of Thomas Fleetwood.

Edward Osborne of Kiveton married first Margaret Belasyse, the daughter of Sir Thomas Belasyse, 1st Viscount Fauconberg of Henknowle. Their son Edward, a promising youth, was unfortunately killed at York Manor during a storm, on October 31st, 1638; while playing with a cat in his chamber, the gales blew down the chamber roof he was crushed to death. Thomas narrowly escaped as he was in the adjoining room.

Margaret died on 7th November, 1624, and was buried at Harthill.

His second wife was Anne, widow of William Middleton of Stockeld, Yorkshire, and daughter of Thomas Walmesley and Eleanor Danvers - in the female line from John Neville, Baron Latimer , and was sister of Henry Danvers, Earl of Danby.

They had two children, Thomas was born in 1632 and was to become the first Duke of Leeds and Charles who died unmarried.

Anne Osborne survived Sir Edward, and was buried at Harthill, Yorkshire, 20 Aug. 1666.

A leading royalist, he was appointed Vice President of the Council of the North in 1633 until 1641, under Sir Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford (1614-1640) who described him as a noble gentleman and treated him as a faithful friend. In 1639 he urged Osborne to visit him in Ireland. In 1639 and 1640 Osborne was at Berwick, superintending the despatch of troops to the border to take part in the threatened war with the Scots.

He was MP for Berwick until 1640 when he resigned and concentrated on his military responsibilities, he became lieutenant-general of the royalist forces raised at York.

He was created Baronet on 13th July 1620.He extended the family estates and in 1636 bought the Manor of Thorpe Salvin including Thorpe Salvin Hall.

Sir Edward Osborne died on 9 September 1647 at age 50

 

Notes:
Re: Christopher Wandesford and his wife, Alice(nee Osborne) had five children, George, Christopher, John, Alice and Catherine. Their youngest daughter, Alice Thornton(1626–1707), the autobiographer, was born on 13 February 1626 in Kirklington, Yorkshire.

 

Re Danvers: John Danvers(1588-1655), married for the third time at Chelsea, on 6 Jan 1648-9, his wife being Grace Hewett,or Hewes and he had by her a son, John (b. 10 Aug. 1650).

Eleanor Danvers was the brother of Sir John Danvers(1588-1655) above. She married Sir Thomas Walmesley. Their daughter Ann Walmsley was the second wife of Sir Edward Osborne of Kiveton (1596-1647). Source
