William Gossip (I), of York, gent., bought the manor of Westhall in Stockhold and Hatfield, and diverse other lands in Hatfield, Thorne and Fishlake, from Sir Thomas Yarborough , of Snaith, in 1714, for £2,010. The copyhold part of the estate was enfranchised after enclosure (1825). The Hatfield House Estate was acquired by William Gossip (III) through his marriage to Ann Hatfield in 1787, she being the only child and heiress at law of John Hatfield of Hatfield (1716-91). After the death of William Gossip III, the estate passed to his wife Ann, who survived him by three years until 1833. The estate then passed to the children of the marriage, but was relinquished by 1838 by the other children to the three spinsters, Georgiana Maria, Ann Louisa and Susanna Augusta. The three spinsters held under a trust, but became entangled in several mortgages.
