In 1604, Ann Shiercliffe married James Greene - the son of Thomas Green of Cawthorne.

Elizabeth Green , was the daughter and heiress of William Green (second son of Thomas Green of Cawthorne by Alice Dyson) and Grace, daughter of John Harrison of Rudston.

She married Sir John Buck, knighted 4 April, 1611, died A. D. 1648. Children included:
Elizabeth, buried 1 September, 1674, at West Tanfield, wife of Matthew Beckwith, of Tanfield,
Frances, wife of Marmaduke Constable of Wassand.

She was buried 4 June, 1644, at Goxhill

William Green of Thundercliffe, M.D. sold the grange to Mr. Hugh Mellor of Ecclesfield who left it to his brother Thomas Mellor.

It was purchased by Thomas(1746-1791), third Earl of Effingham, who had previously gained the Manors of Rotherham and Kimberworth - left by Lord Henry Frederick Howard.

In 1777, the earl took down the old Thundercliffe Grange and laid the foundation stone of the new building. On his death, without issue, it passed to the fourth Earl of Effingham, Richard (1748-1816) who further improved the building and it was for some years his summer residence. He died in 1816.

The original grange was in the Parish of Ecclesfield, while the new building was within the Parish of Rotherham.
