Memories
Weekday Pages for Women with Homes
Monday's Washimg
- Stiff Collar - When these show a stiff edge after being laundered, rub edge with a white wax candle. The collar may then be worn in comfort without rubbing the neck. (Mrs. Peate)
- Lingerie - This will wear longer and not have a shiny appearance if the material is covered with a thin piece of muslin when ironed. (C. Black)
Tuesday's Sewing
- Tracing Patterns - In tracing patterns for embroidery I have found that a wooden meat-skewer has advantages over a pencil. The skewer being soft, will not break through the paper, and of course will leave no unsightly marks. (No Name)
Wednesday's Nursing
- Toenails - Keep the nails well vaselined, then they will always cut easily and not grow hard. Also if troubled with corns, vaseline regularly and they can soon be removed. (Mrs. Standen)
- A Remedy For Coughs - Raspberry vinegar and olive oil in equal proportions. Give from 1/2 tsp. for a small child to 1 tbs. for an adult. (Mrs. T. Wood)
Thursday's Cooking
- Cooking Cabbage - Next time you are having cabbage, instead of cutting in quarters, shred it, then throw in boiling salted water and cook for 10 minutes only. It is easier to drain thoroughly, and the flavour will be further improved if you save all bacon rinds for boiling in same water. (Mrs. B. Myatt)
Friday's Household
-
Useful Hints - When jelly refuses to set, add the juice of a lemon to the liquid, and the jelly will set quite normally.
When flowers in a vase begin to droop, just drop 2 or 3 unused match heads into the water. These will have a wonderful effect on the flowers. (Mrs. W.G. Phillips)
Saturday's Children
- Children's Shoes - Paint the soles with a cheap, quick drying varnish, and while still wet sprinkle over them a little silver sand. This will help to preserve shoes which have very hard wear. (E. I. Foulger)
- Knitting - Do not use a lacy stitch for infant's garments, lest tiny fingers and toes get entangled. (Mrs. Brown)
