John Thornhagh(c1721-1787 )

Sir Thomas Hewett(1656-1726) gave his estate to John Thornhagh, Esq. of Osberton, his godson, for the term of his natural life, he took the name Hewett, probably the wish of Sir Thomas.

John Thornhagh was born in 1720, the son of Andrew Thornagh(1679-1742) of Osberton and Letitia, daughter. of Sir Edward Ayscough of Stallingborough and South Kelsey, Lincolnshire. His grandparents were John and Elizabeth Thornhagh of Fenton, Notts.

His sister, Frances married Patientius Warde of Hooton Pagnell.

He was educated at Queens College, Cambridge.

Thos. Holles, Duke of Newcastle,Earl of Clare, Lord Lieutenant of Notts, Lord Warden of Sherwood Forest, appointed John Thornhaugh chief forester of the walk of Roomwood and Osland in 1742; the following year he was appointed deputy lieutenant of Nottingham, previously a post held by his father.

John Hewett of Osberton and Shireoaks, Notts, and South Kelsey, Lincs. was M.P. for Nottinghamshire 1747-74. He was appointed Sheriff of Nottinghamshire in 1745 and Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1787

He married in 1744, Arabella, eldest daughter and coheiress of Sir George Savile, 7th Bt. Their daughter Mary Arabella was the first wife of Francis Ferrand Foljambe,(1749/50), who took the name and arms of Foljambe, by Act of Parliament, in pursuance of the wills of his grandfather and uncle, to whose estates at Aldwarke, Wadworth, Steeton, and Westow, Yorkshire, he succeeded.

In 1742 he succeeded his father, inheriting Osberton, and in 1756 under the will of his godfather Sir Thomas Hewett he adopted his name and inherited Shireoaks.

As a large Nottinghamshire landowner, he was connected politically with the Duke of Newcastle and Sir George Savile, whose independent stance he adopted, seeing as his principal concern service to his constituents.

Along with George Savile, he was one of the original guardians selected for Philip Stanhope, the future 5th Earl of Chesterfield by his father.

His death in 1787, brought to an end the male line of the family.

Notes re Francis Ferrand Moore (1750-1814): a member of a Hull merchant family, who adopted the surname of Foljambe. He married twice, into the Thornhagh/Hewett and Lumley families, both of them linked by marriage with the Saviles of Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire. His descendants eventually left Aldwark and settled at Osberton, the old Nottinghamshire seat of the Thornhagh and Hewett families
