«ReturnIt was reported that further enquiries showed that the number missing exceeded previous estimates. There were now 238 known to be missing, of these there were 131 identified, 56 not identified, making 187. Twelve bodies had been found earlier in the day in the submerged gardens.
The property owners held a meeting and resolved to take united action against Sheffield Water Company. A clause in the Company's Act passed the year after the Holmfirth flood, specifically fixed on the company the damage caused by the failure or giving away of embankments or reservoirs on any of their works.
The damage was estimated at half a million, which was more than the capital of the company.
The relevant authorities had consulted with the Home Office and Sir. G. Grey send down Mr. Rawlinson.
Mr. R. N. Philipps, a member of the Court of Common Council gave notice that at their next meeting he would move that a grant of 200 guineas be made from the funds of the Corporation. Continued »
