Arthur Cooper
Arthur Cooper, Builder and Stone Mason was born at Chapel Hill, Greasbrough in 1864, the son of Mark Cooper (c.17 JUN 1832 Wentworth) of Brampton Bierlow and Anne A.(Nee Rose) of Chestford, Essex. Mark was the son of William Cooper who married Mary Falding 03 NOV 1831 at Wentworth
The Coopers were in Greasbrough in the early 1700's; in 1703 Ann Cooper, of Greasbrough, married at Bolsterstone to Thomas Ramsden and a Mary Cooper, of Greasbrough married 5th February, 1706/1706 to Jonathan Hirst, of Dalton,
Arthur spent 50 years in the building trade, in a business started by his grandfather William Cooper. At the age of 20, he had been in charge of building contracts in South Wales. He worked for the Foljambe's at Thrybergh, Fullerton's at Ravenfield, and at Wentworth Woodhouse for Earl Fitzwilliam, trading as Arthur Cooper & Sons Ltd.
While working on the Wentworth Estate, he was one of 18 stonemasons who built the Mausoleum, other buildings maintained by the Coopers were Keppel's Column, Hoober Stand and The Needle's Eye.
Arthur was a member of Greasbrough Urban District Council for 32 years during which time, he was Chairman of the Council on 6 occasions. He was Churchwarden at St, Mary's Church, Greasbrough for 30 years and for the same period Secretary for the National School.
Arthur married 3 times and had 3 sons; Mark R. Cooper (Chairman of Rotherham United), George W. Cooper and Arthur C. Cooper and 3 daughters. He died aged 87 and was buried at Greasbrough Church.
