Sir Richard Scott served as a deputy under Thomas Wentworth, when Thomas was Lord President of the Council of the North.

Barnes Hall belonged in the fifteenth century to Archbishop Rotherham who bequeathed it to his relative, John Scott. In 1638 the estate passed to Richard Watts and descended in the Watts family until in 1823 it was sold to William Smith, formerly of Cowley manor in Ecclesfield.
