Wardsend was part of the Duke of Norfolk estate in Ecclesfield and was held by the several generations of the Rawson's. In the 1800's being the seat of Thomas Rawson a major-commandant of the Ecclesfield volunteers.
The direct descendants of Thomas held Brookside in the chapelry of Bradfield, a freehold in the Manor of Sheffield, from the time of Edward IV into the reign of Charles II, when Richard Rawson conveyed it to George Shaw, the son of Richard Shaw of Storrs.
Robert Rawson of Wards End(1621-1666) married Mary Rawson daughter of Edward Rawson of Walkley in 1650
