Jackson of Hickleton

John Jackson, of Edderthorp, near Darfield, Barnsley married Ellen, daughter of John Wilkinson, of Bolton, they had seven sons and seven daughters. In his will John left his son Roger all his lands in Great and Little Houghton and Billingley

Sir John Jackson, the eldest son, of Knottingley in Yorkshire and of Lincoln's Inn, was Attorney to the Council in the North, and a JP for the West Riding. He was knighted in May 1604, became Autumn Reader of the Inner Temple in 1606, and Treasurer of the Inner Temple in 1615. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Savile of Methley, Baron of the Exchequer. Elizabeth died in childbirth, after the birth of her son Francis.Children:

In 1682, Hickleton with Bellah Wood, Barnbrough, Aldbrough, Cold Hiendley and Stotfold, all Sir John Jackson's estates were sold by his widow, Dame Lucy, in order to clear his debts. After his death, his trustees received the purchase price of £6425 from John Wentworth of Woolley. Jackson's heirs and creditors assigned their interest in the estate over to Wentworth.

Henry Bradwardine Jackson (1855-1929), born January, 1855, at Barnsley, was a descendant of this family, the son of Henry and Jane (Nee Tee) Jackson of Cudworth, Barnsley . He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 13 and was promoted through the ranks to admiral of the fleet in 1919. He was responsible for the development of radio telegraphy in the British Navy.
