Robert Auty,(1914–1978), philologist, was born on 10 October 1914 at 31 Tooker Road, Rotherham, the second son and youngest of the four children of George Auty, headmaster of an elementary school, and his wife, Martha Louise, née Richards. Robert's sister Phyllis, who survived him became a distinguished Slavist at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies of the University of London. He was educated at Rotherham grammar school.
