A Home Guard re enactment which took place at the Stag Inn earlier this year.

The B Company of the 58th West Riding (Rotherham) Borough Home Guard had a base at the rear of the Stag Inn during the Second World War. The group was commanded by Lieut Colonel W G Denham.

The upper part of the building was the Guard house and the lower part housed a Browning Water-Cooled machine gun. The Rifle range was situated adjacent, where the shops now are, at the bottom of Brecklands.

Officers of 58th West Riding (Rotherham) Battalion,1941

This is a list of officers in the 58th West Riding (Rotherham) Battalion in 1941. It is not a comprehensive list of all the officers who served, nor does it reflect promotions or transfers for the period 1940 -1944.

The first of the following images is George Hargreaves, aged 20 in his LDV uniform. The second is George again, aged 89 shouldering arms with a stripped down Lee Enfield .303 that may have been used at the Stag. ( It is one of eight that were found in a garage at Herringthorpe, by his son.) George doesn't remember much of the Home Guard now, but he served at the Stag during all of the war years
