Morecambe and Heysham

Morecambe and Heysham, January, 2006 »

Boom Oo Yatta-Ta-Ta - a seafront statue of their most famous personality - short, fat, hairy legs - and their local Wetherspoons pub called "The Eric Bartholomew"* means that we can only be in one unique area of the UK - Morecambe, one of the most beautiful resorts on the west coast.

Little more than just a fishing village in the 19th century there is little wonder that Morecambe has developed and grown in popularity with a numerous, varied supply of holiday accommodation

Morecambe, with a resident population of around 44,000, attracts some 3,000,000 day visitors and around 300,000 residing visitors each year. Much of the revenue generated from these visitors has been reinvested back into community projects such as a recent refurbishment of the promenade which includes the sculpture of Eric Morecambe by Graham Ibbeson.

For those interested in visiting, Morecambe boasts about 250 hotels, over 400 guest houses and apartments together with a multitude of caravans and camping facilities.

Many of the visitors to the area use Morecambe and the adjacent township of Heysham as a base for taking trips into the Lake District, visiting historic Lancaster - which in turn boasts a first class University and for popping across the border into the Yorkshire Dales. And of course Scotland is just a reasonably short drive away.

(* For those who don't know - Eric Morecambe was a famous comedian.)
