POLICE AUTHORITY LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS
South Yorkshire Police Authority has launched a campaign to attract independent members from Rotherham.
The authority is looking for five members of the public to help ensure that all local communities across South Yorkshire receive a responsive policing service which is achieving its targets.
Members will be asked to spend around 15 hours a week in the role - from April 2007 for up to four years - working alongside councillors and magistrates.
The Authority is particularly keen to hear from women, younger people and minority groups to reflect the local diversity of communities in South Yorkshire.
South Yorkshire Police Authority vice-chair Jan Fiore said: The Police Authority has a responsibility to make sure that local people have a say in how they are policed and to act as a bridge between communities and the police force.
We are looking for people who are active in their local communities, who are not afraid to ask tough questions and make hard decisions. We are also looking for Independent members who are good communicators and have expertise in areas such as management, race relations, business, finance, public service and the equalities field.
If you have any of these skills and feel that you can make a difference we would welcome your application. Being a member is an exciting and challenging role and one which provides a great opportunity to make a real difference in policing for your community.
Members will be asked to attend Authority meetings as well as engaging with the local community, representing the Authority on police-related bodies and keeping in touch with national and local policing developments.
Independent members do not receive a salary but will be given an allowance of £10,200 per annum, plus expenses. Those with small children or other caring responsibilities will be assisted by the Authority with the costs of providing carers while on Police Authority work.
Deadline for applications is October 20 and anyone interested in becoming an Independent member can find out more by contacting Stephen Walsh on or visit the South Yorkshire Police Authority website or www.apa.police.uk.
