Barn restored and woken up to create a family home

This barn in Thrybergh has been recently renovated.

The build started around January 2010.

The barn was lovingly restored and woken up to create a family home.

The life cycle of the barn, from design, construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, demolition and the granting of planning permission took approximately 9 months.

The North Elevation wall needed to be completely taken down and rebuilt. This was done in a very sympathetic and competent manner, always looking at ways to reuse materials already on site. If additional materials were needed, time and energy was invested in order to find the absolute perfect match.

It was very important that the building kept as many of its original features, namely the beams, the exposed brickwork and the cast iron columns. These formed the framework of the build. As a Contractor/Design consultant Terry Huggett needed to have an understanding of the owners attachment to the barn as she grew up here and used the barns as a play area as a child.

She wanted a modern family home with life and happiness running through it. A real entertaining space for children and adults. Low maintenance for a modern family. The client worked very hard on a daily basis alongside all the contractors and was involved in every detail, no matter how small. Looking at every aspect of all the environmental obstacles has created the perfect Eco home.

It is felt that insulation was the most instant payback of all the eco-products and therefore the clients over-invested in this area - for example, going well over the minimum requirements for building regulations. Every seam was foil taped and every gap was filled with foam. Every effort to be as airtight as possible and as a result the house is almost passive.

Rainwater Harvesting was an Eco product incorporated into the build. In order to harvest as much water as possible the guttering on the outbuildings were altered to redirect the water for harvesting.

Every option was explored to make use of as much natural light as possible. In areas where the barn needed it, borrowed light was incorporated.
