Described in 1822 as a parish-town, in the upper-division of Strafforth and Tickhill,liberty of Tickhill; 4 miles from Rotherham, 8 from Tickhill, 9 from Sheffield, 47 from York. Population 432. The Church is a rectory, dedicated toSt. Alban, in the deanry of Doncaster, value, £8. 0s. 5d. Patrons, Henry Kater, Esq. This place is famous for a fine bed of stone, peculiarly adapted for the making of Grindstones, 5000 of which, are annually sent by land carriage to Sheffield.
