Wincobank
Wincobank Wood
This wood lies on the west-facing slope of the Wincobank ridge, overlooking the Don Valley, just over 4 kilometres north-east of the centre of Sheffield. The wood is part of a site of archaeological importance known as the Roman Ridge. It contains an Iron Age hill fort , built between 450 and 600 AD, in order to defend the Celtic kingdom of Elmet from the advancing Anglo Saxons. Pottery remains, probably dating from the early 2nd century, as well as evidence of Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age occupation have also been found.
