History

Keppel's Column, a 115 foot (35 metre) tall monument, was built by the Second Marquis of Rockingham in 1778 to commemorate the acquittal of this friend Admiral Keppel, who was charged with cowardice.

Scholes Coppice contains several archaeological features, including Caesar's Camp, an Iron Age fort, regarded as one of the best examples of its kind in South Yorkshire.

Described in 1822 as in the township of Kimberworth, and parish of Rotherham, upper-division of Strafforth and Tickhill, liberty of Tickhill; 3.5 miles from Rotherham, 9.5 from Barnsley.
