Broom

Broom or Broome was in the parish of Whiston. Wm Del Brom(e) was mentioned in ancient Yorkshire Deeds.

Broom Riddings, property of Roche Abbey described as 'about a mile and a half from Roche Abbey, on the road from Rotherham to Roche Abbey'. Robert de Herthwic, for the good of the soul of Beatrix his wife, gave two acres of land here, abutting upon Goseker, with the meadow lying at the head of the said acres.

The Broom Valley Estate was developed from 1951, including St. Barnabas Church which opened in October 1951. The congregation had steadily fallen from 50 people to just 11 in 2006, added to this, costly structural work led to the decision to close this community church. The final service of Family Communion was held at 10am on Sunday, July 2.
