Described in the 1820s as a parish-town, in the lower-division of Strafforth and Tickhill, liberty of Tickhill. It was situated 7½ miles north of Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley The population was 623. The Church a perpetual curacy, dedicated to St. Andrew, in the Deanery of Doncaster, value, £6 15s. 4d. Patrons, the Executors, of William Marsden, Esq.
In 1857 Bolton covered 2,390 acres and contained 124 houses. Population in 1841 - 671; in 1849, 771. A statute fair, was held second Thursday in November, for hiring servants.
In 1856, Luke and Elizabeth White were murdered at the Village Store where they lived.
Goldthorpe was described as a hamlet in the township and parish of Bolton upon Dearne.
The churchyard was once described as like a garden, kept as we should like to see all our churchyards. The church had a 15th century tower with windows of the 14th century.

In 1919 Baron Thomas Williams of Barnburgh was elected a member of Bolton-on-Dearne Urban District Council.
