Manslaughter of Isaac Wood

12th November, 1858

A man named William Haigh of Stubbing near Rotherham, is in custody on a charge of having caused the death of Isaac Wood under the following circumstances:

Two men were playing at bowls together in a yard of a public house at Stubbing on the 12th November, 1858, when Wood won several games of his opponent and a quarrel ensued.

Haigh who was greatly excited, ran home, a distance of about 150 yards, took up his gun, which was in pieces, put it together and then went back to Wood, whom he shot in the left side.

The wounded man was taken to the Infirmary, when it was found his left arm, side and face were seriously injured, the elbow being completely shattered.

He lingered until Sunday afternoon, when death terminated his sufferings.
